VITAMIN D Home Lab 2019 Maria Pita Guerreiro Project at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design - Master degree Category: Design

Concept

The VITAMIN D Home Lab focus on the so called “Winter Depression” that comes from VITAMIN D deficiency, where the inhabitants of North and South equator countries with lack of sunlight all year long have a higher tendency to suffer from this deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency also happens to be one of the most common deficiencies in the world. Mushrooms are the only non-animal source of food with VITAMIN D found, in a time where people increasingly question their food habits or search for natural alternatives instead of chemical supplements, I have conducted an intense research on VITAMIN D deficiency where I have determined that 1 serving of mushrooms enriched with UVB light can cover one's daily recommended amount of VITAMIN D. The VITAMIN D Home Lab aims to showcase and demystify the breakdown of the process of enrichment of mushrooms with VITAMIN D, inviting the user into a mindset of home farming and self-sustainable practices.
